TESCO - Texaco Filling Station

Texaco filling station to pull out...
Texaco announce their 24hr marine fuel facility in Station Road would close as a consequence of another outlet being built on the Barbican Road.  This would impact Looe boat owners who have purpose built steps up from the river to the filling station.

Dear Mr Kirby

Full Application for a Tesco Foodstore, Petrol Filling Station and 36 Affordable Housing Units

Further to Rapleys LLP letter of objection of 6th September 2012 made on behalf of Malthurst Retail Limited, I wish to bring the following points to the attention of the Planning Committee.

  • There is no reference to the 'Petrol filling station' (PFS) in the description of the Proposal on the Council's website;  therefore full public consultation has not been fulfilled, which invalidates the Application in respect of the filling station.
  • Notwithstanding this error, if planning permission is granted for a petrol filling station the only other PFS in Looe (owned by Malthurst Retail Limited) will definitely close, resulting in:
  1. Loss of 6 full-time jobs;
  2. Loss of 24 hour availability of fuel - our site is 24 hours, Tesco will not operate 24 hours in this location;
  3. Loss of 24 hour availbility of marine fuel;
  4. Nearest alternative site is Shell PFS on the A38 at Trerulefoot, 7.4 miles away.

In addition to the points made in Rapley's letter, approval of planning permission would be contrary to Section 8 paragraph 70 of the National Planning Policy Framework, which states the need to "guard against the unnecessary loss of valued facilities and services" and to "ensure that established shops, facilities and services are able to develop and modernise in a way that is sustainable, and retained for the benefit of the community...".

Yours sincerely

Message from the Safety Officer for the Looe RNLI lifeboat crew and member of the HM Coastguard...
"The closure of the petrol filling station in Looe has been a major concern of the Looe Boat Owners Association who have steps access to this main town station to fill up theirs and the many visiting boats in Looe. Without the main town petrol station on the water's edge many more boats will have to be rescued by the Lifeboat and Coastguard. I state this as the sea safety officer for the Looe RNLI lifeboat crew and I am part of the HM Coastguard at Looe."

Looe Community Fire Service regularly use the Texaco Filling Station in Looe, being their nearest 24hr supplier of diesel.
