Plans for a riverside campsite on the banks of West Looe River passed...

This is not the same as the kayaking/ BBQ/ camping facilities and clubhouse for Kilminorth Woods being pursued by the Looe Boat Owners Association but just as significant. The current proposal is for a privately owned campsite further upstream and went before the Cornwall East Sub-Area Planning Committee on 27th May in Liskeard where the plans were passed by a vote of 9 to 6. It was argued by the local member for Trelawny that the economic benefits to the site owner and the community outweighed the environmental concerns.

The case officer was recommending refusal for the following reasons…
  1. The proposal, by reason of the siting of tents and associated paraphernalia in a highly visible, sensitive location would result in the introduction of visually incongruous and intrusive features that would cause demonstrable harm to the otherwise unspoilt character and landscape of the valley, which is designated as an Area of Great Landscape Value.
  2. The application site is located within an unsustainable position, being divorced from the nearest established settlement of Looe, where future guests would be heavily dependent on their private vehicles to access the site and where the resultant additional vehicle movements associated with the proposed development would prejudice highway safety given the nature of the roads leading to the site which are steep and narrow with limited passing places and unsuitable to serve the campsite.

Being close to the Kilminorth Woods Nature Reserve there is a wide range of woodland and water birds in this section of the valley. In particular, the river at Lower Bracken (the application address) is an important site for kingfisher, an Amber-listed species of conservation concern. The development of commercial camping facilities poses the risk of disturbance of this site and of pollution of the waters.
